Winter time. Freezing cold, snow, slush, ice. A disabled nightmare is what the w- word can be!
Yet, in sunny Florida, there are no worries about your winter escapades. The temperature in Dunedin was around 72 degrees when we traveled there during my winter break (I am a teacher). It was sunny, breezy, and beautiful.
Dunedin, a great walking town, also has the “Jolly Trolley”, a trolley that runs between Dunedin, Tarpon Springs, and Clearwater. The cost is two dollars. It does have a wheelchair lift, making it accessible for people with disabilities. We didn’t use it because we were driving, but it looked like so much fun. It can also take you from beach party to pub crawl in no time!
Dunedin has ample parking throughout the town, and our first stop was an Irish pub. We were starving, and luckily, we snagged a handicapped spot right out front. An ADA sign caught my attention. It encourages people to ring the bell if they need assistance to get in. I had never seen that before, and I thought it was a brilliant idea. I kind of wanted to ring it just to see what would happen! Flanagan’s also has courtyard seating and an upstairs, but we weren’t going upstairs. We decided to sit indoors at a booth. It was a perfectly dark pub with soccer playing on the television. The service was great, and it was a perfectly pub-ish pub! The steak bites were delicious, and there were a few menu items I would definitely go back for. Their attention to ADA accommodations and the ready availability of handicapped parking directly out front made coming here a treat.
After filling our faces, we decided to stroll around. There were a lot of great little shops, some live music in the park, and gorgeous views of the water. Everything was relatively flat, so it was easy to navigate with a walker. There were also benches and bistro tables dotting the sidewalks, making rest breaks easy.
Dunedin- Come for the views, stay for the food..This is a great place to have fun, get around, and be safe. Oh, don’t forget your furry friend- it is a VERY dog-friendly town. The next time you visit the Treasure Coast, take a side trip to Dunedin. You will find it worthwhile for the scenery and accessibility!
